Electric Vehicles Overtake Diesel Cars for the First Time in Europe

This year, the Tesla Model Y claims the title of Europe’s best-selling passenger car across all categories.

  • For the first time in Europe, electric vehicle sales have surpassed sales of diesel models, with battery-electric vehicles capturing a 15.1 percent share of the market compared to diesel’s 13.4 percent.
  • Plug-in hybrids have seen gains and losses over time in different European countries but hold a 7.9 percent market share on the continent overall.
  • In the first half of 2023, the Tesla Model Y has achieved the status of being the best-selling model in any vehicle category across Europe.

For decades, diesel cars have enjoyed popularity in Europe, mainly due to traditionally high gasoline prices compared to other regions. Locating a small, affordable hatchback in Europe that isn’t diesel has been a challenging task for quite some time, and the same applies to large sedans, particularly in the UK. Despite the Volkswagen diesel crisis impacting several brands, the demand for diesel vehicles among the car-buying public in certain markets remained largely unaffected.
